By George Barna (2001) WaterBrook Press: Colorado Springs, CO Notes on this book compiled by Diane E. WHY WE NEED A TEAM: When ever we limit ministry to what we can do, it is too small. Leadership works best when it is provided by teams of gifted leaders serving together in pursuit of a clear and compelling vision.

In 1992, the prolific social researcher for evangelicals, George Barna, published a simple little book called the Power of Vision that taught ministries, and especially churches, how to create mission and vision statements.

World of speed download torrent. It’s too bad that not many churches and non-profits took notice.

The book is incredibly simple and easy to use, a common sense approach that puts ministry first and not planning techniques.

Barna writes, “In every one of the growing, healthy churches I have studies, a discernible link has been forged between the spiritual and numerical growth of those congregations and the existence, articulation and widespread ownership of God’s vision for ministry by the leaders and participants of the church. Conversely, visionless congregations fail to experience spiritual and numerical growth.”

I have found this to be true of non-profit Christian parachurch organizations, too.

When WAY-FM Christian radio network implemented a well-founded vision statement to something measurable, tangible, a preferred future with definite benchmarks, it gained incredible momentum and growth.

Barna says, “Vision for ministry is a clear mental image of a preferable future imparted by God to His chosen servants and is based upon an accurate understanding of God, self and circumstances…it is not somebody else’s view for the future, but one that uniquely belongs to you.”

I can’t tell you how many outstanding mega church pastors have told me that mission and vision statements are nothing more than creative retellings of the Great Commission. All churches are the same, they incredibly say.

Barna provides many examples of effective versus ineffective vision statements. For example, here’s one: “To provide a forum for significant relationships for residents in the southern portion of the country. We will assist people in building relationships which respond to people’s needs, hurts, and interests in the context of a culturally relevant experience with Christ.”

Note how tangible and measurable such a statement is. And how it sets directions for he programs and strategies of the ministry.

Whereas the mission statement is different. Barna writes, “A mission statement is a broad, general statement about who you wish to reach and what the church (or parachurch) hopes to accomplish. It is very likely that many churches (or parachurches) share the same mission and could even use the same wording of that mission. Why? Because the mission is basically a definition of ministry. It is not geared to uniqueness or distinctive a or direction.

“…Your mission can be described in a sentence or two. Often, you can use a slogan to capture its essence…What often passes for vision statements are really mission statements…

“To know Him and make Him known”

“To reach the lost at any cost”

“To save the unsaved”

“To evangelize, exalt, edify and equip”

“Love well. Change lives. Through Christ”

“Vision is specific, detailed, customized, distinctive and unique to a given (ministry). It allows a leader to say no to opportunities, it provides direction, it empowers people for service and it facilitates productivity.

“…while the mission statement is philosophic in nature, the vision statement is strategic in character.”
